Humanity in Action

Svetlana Broz of Gariwo presents a Keynote address at the Third Annual Humanity in Action International Conference in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 27, 2012 in which she stresses the importance of civil courage among young people, particularly in the Balkans, to stand up against ethnic and religious antagonisms, bigotry and intolerance of diversity.

Malika Hamidi, Director General of the European Muslim Network, delivers a keynote address followed by a discussion at the Second Annual International Conference in Berlin. In her remarks, she addresses issues related to Islamic identity in Europe from a feminist perspective and answers questions from conference participants.

Antonyia Parvanova, MEP, Bulgaria, and Vice-Chair, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, delivers remarks at the European Parliament for the 2013 Pat Cox-Humanity in Action Fellowship in which she praises the work and impact of Humanity in Action Senior Fellows on the work of the European Parliament.   The Humanity in Action-Pat Cox Fellowship brings together a small group of outstanding students and young professionals from around the world for three-month professional fellowships in the European Parliament.

Dr. Judith Goldstein delivers opening remarks at the Fourth Annual Humanity in Action International Conference at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland, on June 27, 2013.  Dr. Goldstein is the founder and Executive Director of Humanity in Action. In her remarks, she references Jan Karski (Polish resistance fighter and professor of international relations at Georgetown University)  and Stefan Zweig (novelist, dramatist and biographer) to illuminate the present challenges facing Poland.

Konstanty Gebert, associate fellow at the European Council for Foreign Relations and reporter and columnist at “Gazeta Wyborcza,” delivers a keynote address at the Fourth Annual Humanity in Action International Conference in Warsaw on  June 28, 2013.  In his presentation he addresses the differences in collective memory of the Second World War in the Polish and Jewish communities.  

 “It’s not only about divergent interpretations-- It is about fundamental inability to agree about what happened and what didn’t happen.” 

Srdja Popovic, former student resistance leader of Otpor! in Serbia and Founder of the Centre for Applied Non-Violent Action & Strategies, leads a skills workshop focused on teaching strategies for nonviolent democratic activism at the First Annual Humanity in Action International Conference in Amsterdam on July 2, 2010.

Steve Crawshaw, Director of the Office of Secretary General of Amnesty International, delivers a keynote address at the Fourth Annual Humanity in Action International Conference in Warsaw on  June 28, 2013.  In his speech, he addresses the role of resistance movements in Poland, particularly Solidarity, and the impact it has had on  Polish history.

Dr. Dariusz Stola delivers the opening keynote at the Fourth Annual Humanity in Action International Conference in Warsaw on June 27th 2013 in which he addresses the transitions and challenges faced by Poland during the interwar period.  

Dr. Stola is the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation at Collegium Civitas, a Research Fellow at Institute for Political Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and a member of the Programming Board of Humanity in Action Poland.

Frans Timmermans delivers a keynote address at the First Annual Humanity in Action International Conference in Amsterdam on July 2, 2010. In this keynote, Timmermans focuses on identity in Europe, and how current circumstances can be used to positively redefine Europeans' conception of themselves.
At the time of this address, Timmermans served as the Minister of European Affairs for The Netherlands. He currently serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs of The Netherlands.
